Installing Exchange Server 2007 SP2
Microsoft has released service pack 2 for exchange server 2007 on August 24th, 2009. It is available for download here. Exchange 2007 SP2 includes many new features. You can find the complete list of SP2 new features in You Had Me At EHLO blog. One thing I like most is :
- Exchange Volume Snapshot Backup Functionality – A new backup plug-in has been added to the product that will enable customers to create Exchange backups when a backup is invoked through the Windows Server 2008 Backup tool.
Yes, with Exchange Server 2007 SP2, now it is possible to backup and restore Exchange 2007 using Windows Server 2008 Backup Tool. It is a long waited feature :).
You can use the following methods to install Exchange 2007 SP2:
- Upgrade a computer that is running the original release version of Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 SP2.
- Upgrade a computer that is running Exchange 2007 SP1 to Exchange 2007 SP2.
- Perform a new installation of Exchange 2007 SP2.
You can download the SP2 release notes from here. Before upgrading your Exchange Server 2007 to SP2, please review the Exchange Server 2007 SP2 prerequisites. Take a note of the following before installing SP2, which is mentioned in the release notes.
- You need Windows 4.5 Installer before you can install SP2. Operating systems apart from Windows 2008 SP2 needs to download and install it.
- SP2 cannot be selectively uninstalled. You will have to uninstall entire exchange and install it again with a previous version.
- Install SP2 in the following order – CAS, UM, HUB, EDGE, MBX.
- You can upgrade servers running RTM as well as SP1 to SP2 version.
- You can upgrade either using the GUI or command line (Setup.com /mode:upgrade)
- After installing SP2, you can have 2007 in co-existence with 2010
